Domains · prices by extension

This price is not ours to set.

What a domain name costs — to register, to renew and to transfer — depends on its ending. Each one is priced by the people who run it; we buy at their figure and sell at ours, which is why the cost follows how a name ends rather than where you buy it.

Chief among those: wherever a price appears here, what it renews at appears beside it, at the same size, before you have decided anything.

What each ending costs

Prices by ending

Both figures, the same size, every time — what it costs to start a name on that ending and what it costs every year after. Prices exclude GST and are what we are quoting today; nothing on this page holds a figure or a name for you.

Checking the latest prices…

A particular name may be a premium the register prices by its own rules, in which case none of these figures apply and we will say so rather than quote one. Check a name →

Whose price it is

The figure starts somewhere else

It reaches you through us, and it changes hands twice on the way. Here is the whole of that route, because only one step of it is ours — and knowing which one tells you exactly how much of your price we are answerable for.

  1. Set by them

Every ending belongs to somebody, and they price it

Whoever runs the ending you have chosen decides what a name under it costs to take, to keep and to move. That figure is not the same from one ending to the next, and it does not have to be. It is theirs to set and it is the reason a name’s price depends far more on how it ends than on where you bought it.

  2. Bought by us

We add one fixed percentage, and it is the same on all three

Our margin sits on top of theirs as a single fixed percentage of what they charged — the same one whether you are taking a name, keeping it or bringing it across. It is thin: this is not the line we make our living on, and it is not why the shop exists. Which is worth knowing when you are looking at a figure and wondering where it came from, because most of what you are being asked for is the ending’s price and only a little of it is ours.

  3. Converted here

Their money becomes yours at a rate a person here has typed in

Their figure is not in our money, so it has to be converted. That rate is set by hand and then left alone. When the real one drifts far enough to matter, it puts the question in front of somebody here to answer — it does not quietly walk the price of your name up while you are not looking.

That last step is the promise worth having in writing. A price here moves because a person here moved it, and you are told. It does not walk upward on its own between the day you looked and the day you renew.

The promise on this line

Both figures, the same size, wherever a price appears

A cheap first term that renews much higher is the oldest trick in this trade, and it works because the figure you compare on and the figure you live with are printed at different sizes. Every price we put in front of you carries both. This is the card, and the only thing missing from it is the part we cannot honestly fill in yet.

It is a house rule rather than a courtesy, and it is written down as one: nobody here is to find out about a price increase from an angry customer. A sale we win because the second year was in smaller type is not a sale we wanted — you would leave in a year, and you would be right to.

What you can be charged for

Taking it, keeping it, bringing it across

Those are the prices a name carries, and each one is set for the ending rather than for the name. Whichever ending you end up looking at, this is what its figures mean — and there is one more further down this page that exists only if the date goes past.

What it isWhen it is paidWhat decides it
Taking itOnce, when the name is first registeredThe ending, and what the people who run it are asking this year. A first term is the figure most likely to have been made attractive, which is exactly why the renewal is printed beside it.
Keeping itEach time the term comes roundThe ending again. This is the figure you will meet far more often than the first one, so it is the figure we show first when the two differ — and it is shown beside the first term before you have decided anything.
Moving it hereOnce, when a name you already own comes acrossThe ending, and its own rule about how soon a name may move at all: about two months must have passed since it was registered or last moved. That is not our rule and there is no way around it.

Which of those you are looking at depends only on where the name is standing today: nobody holds it yet, or you hold it here already, or it lives somewhere else and is coming across. Whichever it turns out to be, the ending is what decides the figure, and the renewal is shown beside it.

Between deciding and paying

The figure you were shown is the figure you pay

Our price rests on somebody else’s, and somebody else’s can move. What will not happen is that arriving as a different figure at the moment you pay.

What happens

  • You are shown a price, and it is held for a while — long enough to think about it, to ask somebody, to come back after lunch.
  • Before the name is actually bought, the figure underneath ours is looked at once more.
  • If it has moved by more than a little, nothing is bought and you are told. You see the new figure and decide again, rather than finding it on a receipt.

What never happens

  • A different figure appearing at the moment of paying.
  • A quiet correction, with the difference explained to you afterwards.
  • A rate moving underneath a price you have already been shown.

Stopping and asking you again is slower than charging the new figure and explaining it later. It is also the only version of this where you are the one deciding what your name is worth to you.

If the date goes past

The figure nobody wants to meet

A name is held for a term, not owned outright. Miss the end of the term and it does not vanish that night — but the way back becomes expensive quickly, and after a point there is no way back at all. This is the shape of that, and it is the reason the reminders start about two months out and do not stop until the name is renewed.

Renewed before the date, a name costs what you were told it would cost — the figure that was sitting beside the first term all along.

Once it has lapsed there is a window in which it can still be brought back, and what that costs is set by the people who run the ending. It is not a near miss on the renewal. It is a different order of figure altogether, and our handling of it is on top.

Left longer than that, the name is released and anybody may take it. No amount of money brings it back, which is the only entry on this page with no price at all.

Where a name lapsed because of something we failed to do — a reminder that never went, a job of ours that stopped running — bringing it back is ours to pay for, not yours. Every step taken on your name is written down as it happens, which is what makes that a promise you can hold us to rather than a sentence on a website.

The other half

What this figure is not

Most pricing pages stop at what you get. On a line where the price is somebody else’s to set, the half that costs people money is the half about what the figure cannot promise — so it is printed here, at the same width as everything above it.

  • Not a figure we chose

We can only tell you what we sell at. If the people who run your ending raise theirs, ours has to follow, and the only part of that we control is that it moves when somebody here decides it moves — never on its own, and never on the day a currency had a bad afternoon.

  • Not a purchase that ends

A name is held for a term and kept by renewing it. There is no figure on this page that buys one outright, and there is no arrangement under which the date stops mattering. What you are paying for is the holding.

  • Not the same from one ending to the next

Two names that read alike can be priced quite differently because they end differently. That is not a decision of ours about which ending we like — it is what the endings themselves cost, arriving unchanged in the shape of your price.

  • Not a promise about the public listing

Whether your details can be kept off the listing anybody can look up is decided by the people who run your ending, not by us. Where it is offered we will tell you and set it up. We will not sell it to you as though it were ours to include.

  • Not the website, and not the mail

A name is one item. The site that answers on it and the mailboxes that arrive at it are their own, priced their own way, and usually bought on the same afternoon as the name. Keeping them separate on the bill is how you can leave any one of them without unpicking the others.

Tell us the name you have in mind

Or the one you already own and would rather keep somewhere that watches the date. We will tell you what it costs to take and what it costs to keep, in that order, and we will tell you the second one even when it is the less flattering half.
